The Holiday season is in full swing and the baking has begun! I love this time of year with all the family traditions plus creating new memories. My favorite tradition is baking with my mom and my daughter and we especially love making these Chocolate Sugar Cookies!

The original Sugar Cookie is delicious, don’t get me wrong, but this chocolate version will knock your socks off and maybe even become a new holiday tradition. We pair these Chocolate Cookies with a Cream Cheese Frosting and it’s the perfect combination. Add your favorite decorations and share! (or keep them all to yourself, I won’t tell)

What Ingredients are in a Chocolate Sugar Cookie?

All the classic ingredients like: sugar, butter, flour, eggs, vanilla for these cookies, with one very important ingredient- Cocoa Powder. I use my absolute favorite Rodelle Gourmet Baking Cocoa to make these cookies perfect.

This is a very simple recipe to make. Great to make with kids!

Can you use this recipe for cut out and drop cookies?

You can use this recipe for either! This Chocolate Sugar Cookie dough is perfect to keep the shape of a cut out cookie. This dough works best with chilling so the shapes will hold up. This chocolate dough will also work great for a simple drop cookie.

Are These Chocolate Sugar Cookies Soft or Crispy?

These cookies are soft with a crispy edge which happens to be my perfect cookie. However, if you are a crispier sugar cookie fan then just add a couple minutes to the baking time.

What Type of Cocoa Powder is Best to Use for Chocolate Sugar Cookies?

My preferred Cocoa Powder to use for any chocolate recipes is a high quality Dutch Processed Cocoa Powder. I have used the Rodelle Gourmet Baking Cocoa for years and the quality and flavor is the best I’ve tried. The Rodelle Cocoa Powder gives a rich flavor and appearance and you can definitely taste the difference. You can get your own Rodelle Cocoa Powder here and have it sent directly to your house.

Ingredients

3/4 cup butter, room temperature

1 cup sugar

1 large egg

1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

1 and 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

3/4 cup Rodelle Gourmet Baking Cocoa

1 teaspoon baking powder

¼ teaspoon kosher salt

Cream Cheese Frosting

16 ounces (2 blocks) cream cheese, room temperature

1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, room temperature

34 cups powdered sugar

1 teaspoon Rodelle Pure Vanilla Extract

Instructions

  1. Cookies: In a stand mixer, beat the butter for 1 minute on medium speed until smooth and creamy. Add the sugar and beat on medium high speed another minute until fluffy. Add the egg and Rodelle Vanilla Extract and beat again on medium/high speed. Scrape down the sides and bottom of the bowl as needed.

  2. In a separate medium sized bowl, combine the flour, Rodelle Gourmet Baking Cocoa, baking powder and salt together. Whisk until combined.

  3. With the mixer on low, slowly add a little of the flour mixture at a time to the wet ingredients. Mix until flour is just combined. Dough will be thick.

  4. On a piece of parchment paper with a floured roller, roll out the dough to about 1/4″ thick. Cover the rolled out dough with another piece of parchment paper and place into the fridge to chill for 1-2 hours.

  5. Once chilled, preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Line 2 large baking sheets with parchment paper or Silpat mats. Remove the dough sheet from the refrigerator and use a cookie cutter to cut the desired shapes (you can roll into balls and slightly flatten if you do not want shapes) Transfer the shapes to the baking sheet. Re-roll the remaining dough and continue cutting until all is used.

  6. Bake for 10 minutes– the cookies will still appear soft. Allow to cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely before frosting.

  7. Frosting: In a stand mixer or hand mixer, beat the cream cheese and butter on medium high until smooth and creamy.

  8. Add powdered sugar 1 cup at a time, mixing after each addition. Add Rodelle Vanilla Extract and salt then mix again.

  9. Frost cooled cookies and decorate with your favorite Holiday toppings! Enjoy!
