When you need a break from regular pizza but still crave something cheesy and satisfying, this taco pizza made with crescent roll dough is the perfect alternative! It takes the best parts of taco night (seasoned beef, melty cheese, fresh veggies, and a bit of spice) and layers them on top of a flaky, buttery crescent roll crust before getting baked in the oven.
The result is a deliciously different, handheld pizza that’s loaded with taco flavor. As a busy mom, I love how easy it is to whip up on a busy weeknight or when we need an appetizer or snack for hungry kids. The slightly sweet crust makes it a hit with everyone, and I know your family will love it just as much!
The secret to making this easy taco pizza so simple and easy lies in one ingredient: premade crescent roll dough. If you’re not familiar with it, crescent roll dough is a ready-to-use dough that comes in a can, usually found in the refrigerated section of your grocery store, near the biscuits and other refrigerated breads.
It’s soft, buttery, and bakes up into a light, flaky crust that’s perfect for so many recipes, especially pizza! All you have to do is pop open the can, roll out the dough, and you’ve got an easy pizza crust ready to go. It takes the guesswork out of making homemade dough, and it’s so versatile. My kids love it because the slightly sweet and buttery flavor adds a unique twist that pairs perfectly with the savory taco toppings. Trust me, once you try making pizza with crescent rolls, you’ll never look back!
Crescent Roll Dough – This dough forms the buttery, flaky crust that holds all the delicious toppings together, making it the perfect base for this fun and easy pizza. I like using Pillsbury, but you can use whichever brand you love.
Ground Beef – Seasoned ground beef adds a hearty, savory flavor, soaks up the spices, and adds satisfying protein to the pizza.
Taco Seasoning – This seasoning mix infuses the beef with classic taco flavors, bringing a zesty kick that ties the whole dish together. Make your own mix, or use a packet of your favorite!
Cheddar Cheese – Melty cheddar gives the pizza that classic gooey texture while adding a sharp, tangy flavor that makes it taste like a traditional taco.
Shredded Lettuce – Fresh lettuce adds a crisp, cool contrast to the warm, cheesy pizza, giving it a bit of crunch and freshness.
Diced Tomatoes – Juicy tomatoes bring a pop of color and a burst of acidity that brightens up each bite.
Sour Cream – A dollop of sour cream on top adds a creamy, tangy finish that complements the spice of the taco seasoning beautifully.
Sliced Black Olives – These add a savory, slightly salty note that gives the pizza an extra layer of flavor.
Chopped Green Onions – Green onions add a mild, fresh onion flavor that adds a bit of bite and a pop of green color to the pizza, making it extra fresh and delicious.
Prepare for baking: Preheat your oven to 350°F and spray a baking sheet with nonstick spray to make sure nothing sticks.
Roll out the dough: Unroll the crescent roll dough onto the prepared baking sheet. Gently press it out to cover the entire sheet, making sure to seal any perforated edges so you have one smooth, solid crust.
Bake the crust: Pop the dough into the preheated oven and bake for about 12 minutes, or until it’s golden brown and slightly puffed. Keep an eye on it so it doesn’t over-bake!
Cook the beef: While the crust is baking, grab a pan and cook the ground beef over medium-high heat. Once it’s browned, add the taco seasoning and about 1 tablespoon of water, stirring everything together until the beef is fully cooked and flavorful.
Mix the creamy topping: In a smaller bowl, combine the cream cheese, sour cream, and salsa. Stir it all together until the mixture is smooth and well combined—this will be the creamy sauce base for your pizza.
Assemble the pizza: Once the crust is done and has cooled slightly, it’s time to put it all together. Spread the cream cheese mixture evenly over the crust, making sure to cover every inch.
Add the beef: Top the creamy layer with your seasoned ground beef, spreading it out so each bite gets a bit of that delicious taco flavor.
Finish with toppings: Finally, sprinkle the diced tomatoes, shredded cheese, and shredded lettuce over the top. Slice and enjoy!
Allow the crescent roll dough to come to room temperature for a few minutes before unrolling. This makes it easier to handle and less likely to tear.
For extra crispiness, pre-bake the crust for a minute or two longer before adding the toppings, especially if you prefer a firmer base.
When cooking the ground beef, break it up into small crumbles with a spatula to make sure every bite is even with flavor and texture.
Let the crust cool slightly after baking before spreading the cream cheese mixture to keep it from melting and getting too messy or soggy.
If the cream cheese is too firm to mix smoothly, soften it in the microwave for 10-15 seconds before combining it with the sour cream and salsa.
Use a serrated knife to slice the pizza. It cuts through the crust and toppings more easily, especially when they’re still warm.
Pat the diced tomatoes with a paper towel before adding them to the pizza to prevent excess moisture from making the crust soggy.
Sauce: Swap the cream cheese mixture for refried beans, salsa, or even a spicy queso dip for a different base that changes the whole flavor profile. You can also mix things up by using guacamole as a base for a cool, creamy twist.
Cheese: Cheddar is a classic, but you can easily use a blend of cheeses like Monterey Jack, Colby, or even pepper jack for a bit of heat. Sprinkle on some crumbled queso fresco or cotija for an authentic Mexican flavor.
Protein: Ground beef is a go-to, but ground turkey, shredded chicken, or even spicy chorizo can be delicious alternatives that bring their own unique flavors to the pizza. For a vegetarian option, black beans or seasoned tofu can be just as satisfying!
Toppings: Swap the lettuce and tomatoes for roasted corn, sliced avocado, or pickled jalapeños for an extra kick. You can also add a drizzle of hot sauce, ranch, or even a squeeze of lime.
Storing: Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator. It will stay fresh for up to 3 days, making it perfect for a quick lunch or snack later in the week.
Freezing: If you want to save some for later, wrap individual slices tightly in plastic wrap, then place them in a freezer-safe bag or container. They’ll keep well in the freezer for up to 2 months, ready to be reheated.
Reheating: To reheat, place a slice in the oven at 350°F for about 10-12 minutes, or until it’s warmed through and the crust is crispy again. For a quicker option, you can also use the air fryer at 350F for 5-8 minutes.
Can I use a different type of dough for the crust?
Yes! While crescent roll dough gives this pizza a buttery, flaky base, you can also use pizza dough, puff pastry, or even biscuit dough for a different texture and flavor.
How can I keep the crust from getting soggy?
To avoid a soggy crust, make sure to pre-bake the crescent roll dough until it’s golden before adding the toppings. Also, pat down any wet toppings like tomatoes or lettuce before adding them to the pizza.
What’s the best way to cut the pizza?
A pizza cutter works great for this recipe, but if you don’t have one, a sharp knife will do the trick. For cleaner slices, let the pizza cool for a few minutes before cutting.
